Can AI and Crypto Really Work Together? Experts Are Skeptical
GlobalThu Jun 11 2026
For years, crypto fans have pushed wild ideas about blockchain fixing everything from art sales to shipping routes. Yet most of these predictions never took off. Bitcoin still stands as the only real success, while newer projects like stablecoins mostly copy old banking systems in a digital disguise. Now, crypto promoters have found a fresh angle: pairing blockchain with artificial intelligence. The catch? A major study from top universities suggests this combo might not live up to the hype.
Researchers from Yale, Harvard, and Princeton examined whether blockchain could solve AI’s biggest problems. They found mostly ideas on paper, not real solutions. Stablecoins and micro-payments could let AI tools trade data without banks, while secret-keeping tech might protect AI training. Even so, the study warns that most concepts stay in the idea phase. Real-world uses remain rare, and decentralized AI projects struggle to gain traction.
The report also flips the question: Can AI help crypto instead? Here, the answer seems more promising. Machine learning can spot fake transactions better than simple tools, and smart robots can scan code for weak spots. But AI also brings dangers. Hackers could use it to find flaws faster, and sneaky AI agents might drain wallets by exploiting smart contracts. One early crypto security expert now advises staying away from DeFi until these risks fade.
Not all AI-crypto projects are equal. Bittensor tries to build a decentralized AI market where users earn tokens for sharing models. Worldcoin, backed by a big name in tech, took a stranger route: scanning eyeballs to fight fake accounts. Yet even its own reports admit struggles, with layoffs hitting the company recently. Meanwhile, Bitcoin fans claim AI agents will prefer crypto for payments, calling it simpler than signing up for traditional services.
The biggest pushers of AI-crypto links? Often the projects selling tokens. Stablecoin companies like Circle bet AI will rely on their coins for transactions. Even Bitcoin media pushes the idea that AI will choose crypto over banks. But experts argue most claims lack proof. The real test? Seeing if these ideas move from whiteboards to working systems.
