Canada's Sovereignty in the Spotlight: Trudeau and King Charles Meet
CanadaMon Mar 03 2025
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is set to have a chat with King Charles III in London. The topic? President Donald Trump's recent threats to make Canada the 51st state. This meeting has sparked a lot of talk about Canada's independence and sovereignty.
The King has faced criticism for not speaking out against Trump's threats. Many Canadians feel that their head of state should be more vocal about protecting their country's autonomy. Trudeau has made it clear that standing up for Canada's independence is a top priority for his meeting with the King.
Charles is the head of state in Canada, which is part of the British Commonwealth. This group includes many former colonies that have a shared history and cultural ties. Despite this, the anti-royal movement in Canada is not very big. But, the King's silence on Trump's threats has caused some to question his role and the monarchy's relevance in Canada.
Former Alberta Premier Jason Kenney suggested that the Canadian government should ask the King to make a public statement about Canadian sovereignty. This idea has gained some traction, with many Canadians hoping for a clear message from the King.
The King recently met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and invited Trump to Scotland for a state visit. This has led some to wonder if the King will use his influence to address the threats to Canada's sovereignty.
Constitutional lawyer Lyle Skinner and political science professor Daniel Béland have both weighed in on the situation. Skinner hopes that Trudeau's meeting with the King will result in a statement about Canadian sovereignty. Béland believes that many Canadians would be upset if the King does not speak out.
Béland also noted that this is a delicate diplomatic matter. The UK government may not support Trudeau's request for the King to speak out, and any misstep could damage the monarchy's image and political legitimacy.
Canadians have a mixed relationship with the monarchy. While many had a great affection for the late Queen Elizabeth, visits by Charles have not attracted large crowds. This has led some to question the King's role and the monarchy's relevance in Canada.
Artur Wilczynski, a former Canadian public servant, posted on X that Canadians will need to decide what purpose King Charles III serves as King of Canada if he can’t even speak up for our sovereignty.
Abolishing the monarchy would mean changing the constitution. This is a risky undertaking, given how delicately it is engineered to unite a nation of 41 million people that embraces English-speakers, French-speakers, Indigenous tribes and a constant flow of new immigrants.
