Senator Elizabeth Warren and Republican challenger John Deaton faced off in a heated second debate ahead of the 2024 senatorial election. The debate, moderated by GBH News and NEPM, covered a range of topics, including abortion and aid to Ukraine.
Deaton, a moderate running for office for the first time, accused Warren of being partly responsible for the overturning of Roe v. Wade. He claimed that Warren's support for removing the filibuster in 2013 led to the appointment of anti-abortion judges. Warren retorted by stating that Deaton had previously supported one of these judges, Neil Gorsuch, who was known for his skepticism of Roe v. Wade.
On the topic of Ukraine, Deaton expressed concern over the lack of a clear plan for American aid to the country. He argued that the money could be better spent on domestic priorities like Medicaid and universal pre-K. Warren, however, advocated for continued support to Ukraine, citing it as a crucial frontline in the fight for democracy against Russian aggression.
Despite their differences, both candidates agreed on the importance of expanding passenger rail service between Boston and western Massachusetts. They both believe it would transform the state's economy and help with housing affordability and renewable energy growth. However, they disagreed on the role of government in solving economic issues. Deaton blamed government overreach for many problems, while Warren advocated for more government involvement.
The debate ended with a lighthearted lightning round where they shared their favorite spots in western Massachusetts, political role models, and their Halloween candy preferences.
