Capitol Clash: A Protester's Fight Over Iran Bombings
Washington, USAThu Mar 05 2026
A 44‑year‑old former Marine named Brian McGinnis, who is running for the Senate in North Carolina under the Green Party banner, was hurt during a confrontation inside the U. S. Capitol on Wednesday. He had joined an armed‑services hearing and loudly claimed that Israel was the cause of the war, arguing that America should not support Israeli military actions.
Video footage captured by Reuters shows McGinnis in a military uniform, his hand trapped behind an open doorway. Capitol Police and Republican Senator Tim Sheehy tried to pull him out, but he resisted. The struggle caused a sharp crack as the door hinge gave way.
The incident happened amid heightened tension after the United States and Israel launched attacks on Iranian targets. Those strikes prompted retaliation from Iran, sparking a new, volatile conflict in the Middle East.
McGinnis’s campaign website lists his background: he attended Marine boot camp after high school, served four years, and is also a firefighter and father of four. He has not yet responded to questions about the injuries he sustained during the altercation.
Senator Sheehy posted on X that he stepped in to calm the situation, describing McGinnis as someone who sought confrontation. He expressed hope that the protester receives necessary help without further violence.
Capitol Police reported that three officers were injured, and McGinnis was treated for his own injuries. He now faces charges of assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest, and obstructing a lawful demonstration.
The video does not clearly show the extent of McGinnis’s wounds, and his whereabouts after the incident remain unknown.
