Anthony Mackie, star of the upcoming film Captain America: Brave New World, found himself in hot water over a comment made about the iconic superhero. While promoting the film in Italy, Mackie sparked backlash by suggesting that Captain America isn't just about America. He took to Instagram to clarify his statement, "I'm a proud American, and carrying Captain America's shield is a huge honor, " he wrote. "CAP stands for things everyone can connect to, like honesty and integrity. " During the viral clip, Mackie emphasized that Captain America is more about universal values than just any one nation.
Mackie's comments come as he takes over the iconic role from Chris Evans. The new film, set for release on February 14, is the first Captain America movie since Avengers: Endgame. Mackie also starred in the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
In 2016, while promoting Captain America: Civil War, Mackie discussed the significance of having diverse superheroes. He highlighted the importance of representation, "Kids need to see heroes that look like them, " he said. "It's not just about the costume or powers, but about connecting with the character on a deeper level. "
