The first Cruisin’ the Day for United Way turned River Parishes Community College’s parking lot into a lively showcase of classic cars, food stalls and fundraising activities. Over 150 vehicles—from Mustangs to Studebakers—lined up for judged contests, while twenty craft and food vendors offered tasty treats. Attendees could also try their luck in raffles and silent auctions, all proceeds heading to the Capital Area United Way.
The event was a joint effort by Nova Chemicals, RPCC and the United Way. “Hosting this at RPCC was a pleasure, ” said Landon Corbin, marketing director for the college. “It’s important for us to support local causes. ” Nova Chemicals’ team, led by electrician Joey Dinino and specialist Johnny Noel, chose the charity because they always seek fresh ways to give back. They noted that RPCC’s spacious parking area was ideal for drawing car lovers from nearby towns and even as far as Florida.
The money raised will feed the United Way’s general fund, which covers health services, education programs and basic needs. “The turnout exceeded our expectations, ” said Diane Drake, director of corporate relations for the organization. “This car show is a new and enjoyable way to support our community. ” The funds will also help expand United Way 211, a confidential helpline that connects people with local resources across ten parishes.
The event showcased how community collaboration can turn a parking lot into a hub of generosity. By mixing nostalgia with practical support, the organizers created an engaging experience that benefits both attendees and those in need.
