Carville Says Republicans Excel at Scary Stories and Democrats Must Catch Up

James Carville, a longtime Democratic strategist, pointed out that Republicans are skilled at making up scary stories about Democrats. He said they also tell strong good and bad stories about themselves and the other side. Carville warned that the Democratic candidate in 2028 will need to learn this trick to have a chance to win.

He also noted that he expects 2026 to bring big wins for Democrats. Carville has even suggested that Trump could quit before his term ends and later be pardoned by Vance if Vance takes the top job.

A listener wrote in to Carville and his co‑host Al Hunt on their podcast, asking why Republicans seem to paint Democrats as socialists, communists or other scary labels while Democrats struggle to do the same with racism, antisemitism or corruption among GOP members. Carville answered that the Republicans are already doing the job themselves. He said the public sees their actions and judges them without needing Democrats to point out faults. In his view, a Democratic response right now is not necessary.

Marslender, who once advised Senator Ron Johnson and worked in the Trump administration before becoming a Republican consultant, said the GOP’s use of the socialist label is not just talk. She noted that many Democrats call themselves supporters of the Democratic Socialists of America, with polls showing about fifty‑nine percent doing so. She said the group wants to pack the courts, change how banks work, get rid of capitalism, let people move across borders freely, close prisons, do away with the Senate, and give the government more power. Marslender argued that Carville’s idea that Republicans have ruined their own reputation is more spin than truth, and that the real Democratic problem is a weak message and a lack of a strong spokesperson. Carville agreed that the party’s 2028 hopeful will need to master both the scary and the uplifting story to succeed.
