Cash Crunch Hits Boeing: New Measures to Stay Afloat Amid Ongoing Labor Dispute

The ongoing strike by over 30,000 workers at Boeing has taken a toll on the company's finances. As a result, the planemaker's Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Brian West, has announced a slew of cash-conserving measures. In a memo to employees, West revealed that the company will be imposing a hiring freeze, furloughs, and other austerity measures to weather the storm. Boeing is facing a difficult period, according to West, who acknowledged the strain the strike is putting on the company's operations. "We are working in good faith to reach a new contract agreement that reflects the feedback of our IAM 751 and W24 represented employees in the Pacific Northwest and enables operations to resume," West said. "However, our business is in a difficult period, and we must take necessary actions to preserve cash and safeguard our shared future. " The company will put a halt to non-essential spending, including travel, consultants, contractors, and non-critical capital expenditures. All employees, including executive council members, will no longer be able to fly in first or business class for non-essential travel. Additionally, appearances at airshows, tradeshows, and other special events will be minimized, and team-building activities will be put on hold. Boeing will also discontinue issuing most supplier purchase orders for the 737, 767, and 777 programs. The company is considering temporary furloughs for many employees, managers, and executives in the coming weeks. "We know that these actions will create some uncertainty and concern, as well as many questions," West said. "We'll be sharing additional information in the coming days as we have detailed guidance on the implementation of these measures. "
