Cats and Mites: A Simple Solution to a Big Problem

Thu Mar 27 2025
Notoedres cati is a tiny, contagious mite that loves to burrow into a cat's skin. This nasty little critter causes mange, which is really itchy and leads to some nasty skin issues. Now, imagine a group of cats living together in one home, all dealing with this problem. This is where a recent study comes into play. The goal was to test a new treatment called NexGard Combo. This combo pack includes three powerful ingredients: esafoxolaner, eprinomectin, and praziquantel. The study involved 17 domestic shorthair cats, all naturally infested with N. cati. These cats were split into two groups. One group got the NexGard Combo treatment, while the other got a placebo of mineral oil. The cats were kept in separate rooms to avoid any cross-contamination. Their progress was tracked over several weeks. The researchers looked at clinical scores, mite counts from skin scrapings, and body weights. They used statistical methods to analyze the data. The results were impressive. The treated cats showed 100% efficacy against N. cati. No live mites were found from Day 14 until the end of the study. The treated cats also had lower clinical scores and higher body weights by Day 56. In contrast, the placebo group had high mite counts and clinical scores throughout the study. One of the most important findings was that none of the cats showed any adverse events related to the treatment. This is a big deal because it means the treatment is safe and effective. The study highlights how powerful the combination of esafoxolaner, eprinomectin, and praziquantel can be in treating notoedric mange in cats under home conditions. But here's a critical point to consider. While the study shows promising results, it's important to remember that every cat is different. What works for one might not work for another. Always consult with a vet before starting any new treatment. Plus, preventing mite infestations in the first place is always better than treating them later. Regular check-ups and a clean living environment can go a long way in keeping cats healthy and happy. This study is a step forward in finding effective treatments for notoedric mange. It shows that with the right approach, even tough problems can be solved. But it's also a reminder that pet health is a complex issue. It requires careful consideration and expert advice.
