Cats Often Leave Small Creatures at Home – Why It Happens
Many cat owners have experienced the odd moment when a tiny creature appears on the doorstep or in the living room. It’s usually a small rodent that the cat has captured. The pet seems to think this is a nice gesture, but science says otherwise.
Cats are natural hunters that work alone. They chase prey for their own hunger, not to feed a human. The dead rodent they leave is really a meal they plan to eat later, just placed near the owner by accident.
A meat‑rich, grain‑free diet can lower how often these deliveries happen. Cutting out grains and focusing on high‑protein food reduces the drops by a noticeable amount. Playing with the cat for a few minutes each day also helps, trimming the occurrences by about a quarter.
Studies show only about a fifth of kills end up at home. Roughly a third are eaten right away, and nearly half are abandoned where they die.
