Ceasefires Hanging by a Thread: Disputes and Deadlines

Gaza Strip, PalestineMon Jan 27 2025
Ceasefires in Gaza and Lebanon are under threat due to disagreements over deadlines. Israel accuses Hamas of violating the ceasefire in Gaza by changing the hostage release order. This led to Israeli forces opening fire, killing two. In Lebanon, at least 22 protesters were killed by Israeli forces who were demanding an Israeli withdrawal as per the ceasefire agreement. The U. S. President's suggestion to resettle Gaza's population temporarily in Egypt and Jordan was rejected by Hamas and Jordan. The war in Gaza started after Hamas attacked southern Israel, killing around 1, 200 people and abducting 250. Israel's counterattack has resulted in over 47, 000 Palestinian deaths, half of them children and women. The release of four female Israeli soldiers from Gaza brought joy to their families but also highlighted the struggle to bring back the remaining hostages. The Palestinian President condemned Trump's suggestion to "clean out" Gaza, warning of potential mass displacement and instability. France considers allowing Israeli companies to participate in the Paris Air Show, thanks to the ceasefires. Israeli right-wing leaders support Trump's remarks about resettling Palestinians, seen as controversial by Palestinians and their supporters. UNRWA warns of severe consequences if Israel closes its headquarters in Jerusalem.
