Celebrating a Teacher’s Journey at Buffalo State
Buffalo, NY, USASun May 10 2026
Buffalo State University will honor Wendy A. Paterson, a 1975–76 alumna who now serves as interim dean of the School of Education and Applied Professions, with its Distinguished Alumnus Award. The award is presented at the 154th Commencement on Saturday, May 16, in the campus Sports Arena.
The university has given this honor to graduates who excel professionally, give back to their communities, and remain loyal to the institution. Paterson’s record fits these criteria perfectly. She earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree in education from Buffalo State, then completed a Ph. D. in elementary education at the University at Buffalo in 1997.
Her career began as a reading specialist in Kenmore‑Tonawanda schools before moving into higher education. She helped launch Buffalo State’s Academic Skills Center and was recognized with the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Professional Service. She rose through faculty ranks to become a full professor and department chair, then served as dean at St. John Fisher College from 2009 to 2012. Returning to Buffalo State, she led the School of Education and introduced six strategic priorities focused on curriculum renewal, collaboration, and growth mindset.
Paterson has published books on single‑parent households and divorced fathers, and she received the Albert Harris Award for research on literacy technology. Her advocacy for teachers is widely respected; she has launched professional development programs, urban teacher academies, and endowed chairs that strengthen the teaching profession.
Through her leadership, research, and service, Paterson exemplifies the qualities Buffalo State seeks in its students: dedication to education, community involvement, and lifelong commitment to the university’s mission.
