Celebrating Texas Panhandle Sports Legends

Amarillo, USAFri May 29 2026
The next week brings two important gatherings in Amarillo that shine a light on local sports heroes. On June 7, the Texas Panhandle Sports Hall of Fame will honor a new class of athletes and coaches. A ceremony at the Civic Center Grand Plaza kicks off at 2 p. m. , followed by a free reception. Four new inductees—Harold Lewis, Sherwin Cox, Teresa Tinner and Ryan Palmer—join a growing list of 214 honored figures. Each has made lasting contributions to football, golf, basketball or other sports in the region. Earlier that month, June 9, the Dick Bynum Awards will celebrate outstanding female collegiate athletes from the Amarillo metro area. Hosted by the Downtown Lions Club at Polk Street Methodist Church, the event runs from noon to 1:15 p. m. Guests will be served lunch at 11:45 a. m. , and the awards ceremony honors five finalists from volleyball, track, basketball, soccer and wrestling. The top prize includes a $1, 000 donation to the winner’s high‑school athletic department.
Kids Inc. will host media briefings on May 29 and June 6 to preview the Hall of Fame event. The organization’s mission is to preserve regional sports history and inspire future generations through recognition of excellence. The Hall of Fame also announces coaches and athletes of the year for 2025‑26 across eleven sports, along with special award winners. Highlights include coaching champions in baseball, basketball, cross country and more, as well as standout athletes such as Carson Allen (baseball) and Sophie Ferro (soccer). Special honors recognize lifetime achievements, inspirational stories, and community impact. The Texas Panhandle Sports Hall of Fame remains a key institution for celebrating local talent, preserving legacy and encouraging young athletes to pursue greatness.
