USASat Feb 01 2025
A debate was sparked when a video of a popular singer's reaction was used in a controversial way by a political administration. The video showed the singer crying, upset about the plight of immigrants. The administration took this video and mixed it with interviews with people who had lost family members to crimes allegedly committed by undocumented immigrants. That turned the original emotional response into a political statement.
Selena Gomez the Singer is well known for her views on immigration.
She shared her feelings about the mass deportations happening in the country. Trump addressed the issue a lot.
The White House went even further by sharing the video, rebuking the Singer’s emotional outpouring against a backdrop of heart-wrenching testimonies from the families of victims. So why did they do this? ! This was a powerful move by the administration, aimed at shifting the narrative around immigration. The White House showed video clips of the Singer’s tearful response to Trump’s immigration policies. In her video, Selena was seen expressing her sorrow and helplessness, saying, “I’m so sorry, I wish I could do something but I can’t. ” Trump’s administration used this to contrast with the suffering of law-abiding citizens whose loved ones had been murdered.
People who supported the singer pointed out that the singer's mourning was for the hardworking immigrants who were being separated from their families. They do not support blind enforcement of deportation orders.
Recently, Trump has been very vocal about targeting immigrants, frequently posting on social media, but the data tells a different story. A study done by the Texas Department of Public Safety showed that undocumented immigrants had the lowest rate of any crime, compared to other groups.
Trump made sure to highlight the people who had lost loved ones to violent crimes allegedly committed by undocumented immigrants. However, it's important to note that the study was funded by the National Institute of Justice. The study showed data that did not support his policies. So why was the study pulled? !
The Singer has long spoken out about her experiences with immigration. She even hosted a television show that highlighted the struggles of immigrant families.
Finally, in her own words “I feel a responsibility to use my platform to be a voice for people who are too afraid to speak”That makes the Singer one of the most outspoken celebrities on this topic.
