Marwan Barghouti, a Palestinian leader, has been behind bars since 2002. He's seen as a crucial figure for Palestinian unity and statehood. Over 200 celebrities have now joined the call for his release.
These stars include actors Benedict Cumberbatch, Josh O'Connor, and Javier Bardem, as well as musicians like Sting and Fontaines D. C. Writers Sally Rooney, Annie Ernaux, and Margaret Atwood also support the cause. Even artist Nan Goldin and former footballer Gary Lineker have added their voices.
The celebrities expressed deep concern about Barghouti's treatment in prison. They claim he's been subjected to violence and denied legal rights. In an open letter, they urged the United Nations and world governments to push for his freedom.
Barghouti's supporters often compare him to Nelson Mandela. He was sentenced to five life terms by an Israeli court in 2004. The charges were related to attacks during the second Palestinian intifada. Barghouti refused to recognize the court's authority, and later, the Inter-Parliamentary Union criticized the trial.
Israel has not released Barghouti in any prisoner swaps since the Gaza war began. His son revealed that Barghouti was badly beaten by guards during a transfer. He suffered broken ribs and head injuries. Additionally, a video surfaced showing Israel's National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir threatening a frail Barghouti in jail.
The campaign for Barghouti's release is gaining momentum. It's part of a broader effort to address the ongoing conflict and human rights issues in the region.
