ChatGPT Gets a Smart Upgrade
San Francisco, California, USA,Wed May 06 2026
OpenAI has rolled out a new version of ChatGPT’s core engine, called GPT‑5. 5 Instant. The change is meant to make the AI more precise and reduce the number of “hallucinations” it produces, especially when users ask about complex topics like medicine, law or finance.
The upgrade also improves the bot’s ability to handle images and solve STEM problems, and it can now decide when a web search might help give a better answer. The system is smarter about remembering past conversations, files and even Gmail content—though that extra memory feature is only available to paid subscribers right now.
According to the company, responses from GPT‑5. 5 Instant are sharper and more concise while still keeping the friendly tone that users expect. The new model removes a lot of extra formatting and emoji use, so replies look cleaner but stay informative.
All ChatGPT models are getting a new “memory source” that shows users exactly which previous chats, documents or other data points the AI used to craft its answer. This transparency helps users understand why the bot says what it does.
The update goes live today for everyone who uses ChatGPT, replacing the older GPT‑5. 3 Instant as the default engine. Free users can try the new model, but personalized memory features are currently limited to Plus and Pro plans on the web. Mobile access will follow soon, and eventually all tiers—Free, Go, Business and Enterprise—will get the full set of personalization tools.
It is still unclear when Apple’s integration with ChatGPT will switch to GPT‑5. 5 Instant, but the upgrade is already available on the main platform.
