Checking for Anxiety and Depression in Fibromyalgia Patients: A Physiotherapist's Guide
Flanders, BelgiumFri Jun 27 2025
Fibromyalgia is a tricky condition. It's not just about physical pain. Many people with fibromyalgia also deal with anxiety and depression. But how well can physiotherapists spot these issues? A recent study looked into this.
Fifty-three physiotherapists in Belgium took part. They checked 169 new fibromyalgia patients. The patients had been dealing with the condition for about eight years on average. The physiotherapists used two main tools to screen for anxiety and depression. One was a quick questionnaire. The other was a simple 0-10 rating scale.
The results showed that a lot of fibromyalgia patients have anxiety and depression. About 8 out of 10 had at least mild anxiety. Half had moderate to severe depression. The quick questionnaires were better at spotting these issues than the rating scales. Except for severe depression, the questionnaires were more accurate.
So, what does this mean? Physiotherapists can use these quick questionnaires in their regular check-ups. This can help them catch anxiety and depression early. Early detection means better treatment and care for fibromyalgia patients.
But here's a thought: Why do so many fibromyalgia patients have anxiety and depression? Is it because of the pain? Or is it something else? More research could help answer this.

How do the results of this study compare with previous research on screening for anxiety and depression in fibromyalgia patients?
Could the high prevalence of anxiety and depression among fibromyalgia patients be because they are stuck in a room with a physiotherapist for two weeks?
How might the timing of the screening (after two weeks of treatment) affect the results and their generalizability to other settings?
