Ever wondered how shoulder surgeries in Switzerland are doing? A big study called ARCR_Pred took a close look. They wanted to see if arthroscopic rotator cuff repairs (ARCR) were safe and worked well. They got 973 patients from 19 hospitals, both public and private, from June 2020 to November 2021. They checked in with these patients up to two years later.
Guess what? Most people (99% at 6 weeks, 95% at 6 months, 89% at 12 months, and 88% at 24 months) stuck with the check-ups. The big surprise? More people had big tears than expected (44% vs. 20%). But otherwise, the patients were pretty similar to those who didn't join or dropped out.
Now, you might be thinking, "Did the surgeries help? " Yep, they did! Scores got better over time. At 6 months, 83% to 92% showed improvements. At 12 and 24 months, it was 91% to 97%.
The study also looked at how hospitals (public vs. private) and other factors affected the results. They found that education helped, but depression, anxiety, smoking, and certain health issues hurt the scores. Big tears only mattered for one score (Constant-Score).
So, what's the takeaway? This study could help a lot of people in Switzerland. But there's more work to do. We need to figure out the best ways to measure results and compare different surgeons and treatments.
