Checking Meat's Halal Status Quickly
Thu Dec 26 2024
Have you ever wondered if the meat you're eating is truly halal? A recent study tackled this issue by exploring a quick method to check for pork adulteration. This is important because some people, like Muslims and Jews, can't eat pork. Sometimes, cheaper pork gets mixed with pricier meats like beef or lamb. The study experimented with different amounts of trypsin (10, 50, and 100 μL) and varied digestion times. Guess what? They found that 50 μL of trypsin for 30 minutes worked best. This method can sniff out specific pork peptides, even in raw or processed meat. Four proteins—L-lactate dehydrogenase, haemoglobin subunit beta, carbonic anhydrase, and myosin-1—could serve as pork biomarkers. This is the first time anyone's looked into fast analysis for halal meat authentication. Isn't that interesting?
