A recent study suggests that eating more than 50 grams of high-fat cheese daily might lower the chances of developing dementia. This study, which tracked over 27, 000 adults in Sweden for about 25 years, found that people who ate this amount of cheese had a 13 percent lower risk of dementia compared to those who ate less than 15 grams.
The study focused on cheeses with more than 20 percent fat, like brie, gouda, cheddar, parmesan, gruyere, and mozzarella. It's important to note that this study only shows a correlation, not a direct cause-and-effect relationship. The researchers did not find the same benefits for low-fat cheese, milk, or other dairy products like yogurt and kefir.
Dementia affects millions of people worldwide, and its numbers are expected to rise. Since treatments are limited, researchers are looking into ways to reduce the risk of developing dementia. Diet is one area of focus, but the findings can be inconsistent.
This study is part of a larger effort to understand the role of diet in brain health. Previous research has had mixed results, so this study aims to clarify some of those findings. However, experts caution that relying on a single food to protect against dementia may not be the best approach.
The study has some limitations, such as relying on a one-time food diary and interview from 25 years ago. People's diets and lifestyles can change a lot over time, which could affect the results.
