Chicago Mayor Proposes Massive Settlement After Police Misconduct Cases

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson is pushing a huge $260.8 million settlement to fix police misconduct issues. This deal covers 16 wrongful conviction lawsuits and helps 17 people who were falsely accused of murder. Many of those affected lived in Humboldt Park area.

Forty-three individuals were freed after serving time for crimes they didn't commit. The city has spent over $100 million in lawsuits against Det. Reynaldo Guevara. Additional payments continue to push the total toward $260.8 million.

This sum is nearly three times bigger than a past $90 million agreement for a different case. That earlier deal closed 176 cases involving another former officer. Council members say bundling cases makes sense financially. They want to reduce legal fees and help taxpayers.

Guevara himself now resides in Texas and faces no criminal charges. Johnson calls the approach smart for getting justice while protecting public funds. The finance committee will vote on Monday whether to approve the big package.
