Chicago's Humid Heat Wave: A Silent Health Threat
Chicago, Illinois, USAFri Jun 20 2025
In Chicago, a heat dome is bringing a week of intense, humid heat. This isn't just about high temperatures; it's the humidity that makes it dangerous. Daytime highs will reach the low to mid-90s, but with humidity, it will feel like 100 degrees or more. Nights won't offer much relief, staying in the 70s and feeling like 90 degrees. This kind of heat can be deadly, especially for those without air conditioning or proper hydration.
This heat wave is unusual because the humidity will stick around for days, not just a day or two. This persistent moisture in the air makes it hard for the body to cool down, leading to serious health risks. Older adults, in particular, struggle to regulate their body temperature in these conditions. The lack of cool nights also means no relief from the heat, which can lead to heat-related illnesses and even death.
The city has opened 140 cooling centers, but many are not well-equipped to handle the heat. They lack basic amenities like cold water, cots, and clear signage. Many of these centers also close overnight, leaving those without shelter or air conditioning vulnerable. This is a big problem because nights are when the body tries to recover from the day's heat.
The humidity is partly due to climate change, which is making summers in the Midwest more humid. This trend is expected to continue, making heat waves more dangerous. The city needs to do more to prepare for these extreme weather events and protect its residents.
