Chiefs' Super Bowl Struggles: A Tale of Bad Pass Protection
Sat Feb 15 2025
The Kansas City Chiefs had a rough time in Super Bowl LIX. The Philadelphia Eagles dominated the line of scrimmage, making it a tough day for the Chiefs' offense. The Eagles' defensive line was relentless, sacking Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes early and often. This constant pressure threw off Mahomes' timing throughout the game.
The Eagles' defensive tackle, Milton Williams, had a standout moment early in the game. He lined up against Mike Caliendo and quickly worked his way through the B-gap. Creed Humphrey tried to help, but Williams was too strong. This forced Mahomes to move to his right, where Jalen Carter hit him hard, causing a fumble. This play summed up the Chiefs' struggles on the field.
The Chiefs' offensive line had a tough time, especially with left guard Joe Thuney filling in at left tackle. Thuney had a good playoff run, but the Eagles' larger pass rushers took advantage of his shorter arms. Thuney struggled to keep up, and Mahomes had nowhere to go. The Chiefs' running backs and tight ends also had trouble with their blocking, making it hard for Mahomes to escape pressure.
Mahomes had a rough game overall. His late-game numbers looked better thanks to some impressive passes, but the first half and much of the second half were a struggle. On an early third down, poor play-calling led to Mahomes missing an open receiver. He tried to scramble but ran into pressure and got sacked.
The Chiefs' offensive line issues were a big problem all season, and it caught up with them in Super Bowl LIX. The team's need for stability at left tackle has never been more apparent. It should be one of their top priorities for the offseason.
The Chiefs' dream season turned into a nightmare in a matter of minutes. Now, it's time for them to pick up the pieces and move forward.
