Children in Afghanistan Face Growing Hunger Crisis
AfghanistanTue Mar 03 2026
The United Nations reports that the number of Afghan children suffering from severe malnutrition will rise sharply in 2026.
Aid to the country has dropped significantly since 2021, after foreign troops left and the Taliban took control.
Natural disasters such as earthquakes have worsened food shortages.
Last year, the highest increase in child malnutrition on record was seen; this year 3. 7 million children may need treatment.
An additional 200, 000 kids are now at risk of acute malnutrition.
Because of funding cuts, the World Food Programme can only provide treatment to about one in four children who need it.
Many families cannot even reach health clinics, especially those stuck by snow in highland villages.
Most child deaths happen quietly at home during winter months.
Officials fear that once the snow melts, many more children will have died unnoticed.
Border policies in Pakistan and Iran have forced over 5 million people back into Afghanistan, straining the already limited resources.
Some returning refugees live near recent conflict zones between Pakistani and Afghan forces, which has led the WFP to pause services there.
The ongoing fighting blocks access to health care, raising concerns that tens of thousands more children could become malnourished.
The situation highlights the urgent need for increased humanitarian support and conflict resolution.
