Children of Moms With High Blood Pressure Face Health Risks

Wed Mar 25 2026
Studies show that people born to mothers who had high blood pressure during pregnancy are more likely to develop heart problems later in life. Researchers reviewed 225 papers and focused on 15 that met strict quality standards, covering over 260 000 adults. The average age of these participants was between 19 and 55 years, and just under half were women. Findings reveal that these adults have higher blood pressure—about 3. 4 mm Hg for systolic and 2. 2 mm Hg for diastolic—than those whose mothers did not experience such pregnancy complications. Their chance of developing high blood pressure is 50 % higher.
Women who were exposed to the same complications in utero are even more at risk, with a 72 % higher likelihood of experiencing similar issues and a 90 % increase in the risk of severe preeclampsia. Moreover, these individuals show a greater tendency toward early heart attacks and strokes. The research underscores that the hereditary link between pregnancy hypertension and adult heart disease is strong. It highlights the need for early lifestyle changes, regular heart checks, and preventive care to reduce long‑term risks.
