Chile shows its strict new approach to migration control
Chile, SantiagoFri Apr 17 2026
Chile just carried out its first deportation flight under a tougher immigration strategy. The government sent 40 people back to Bolivia, Colombia, and Ecuador from the northern city of Iquique. Officials didn’t say how often these flights will happen next, but they called it the start of a long-term plan.
Most of those sent away had overstayed visas or entered illegally. Others had committed crimes like theft or drug violations, forcing judges to order their removal. Authorities confirmed 15 people were deported for breaking laws, while 25 faced immigration rule violations. The government framed this as part of a bigger reform that began when the new president took office in March.
The push reflects a campaign promise to link stricter border control with crime reduction. The president has warned undocumented migrants to leave on their own or face forced removal. Since his election, over 2, 000 Venezuelans have already chosen to go back home or move elsewhere.
Critics argue these measures could push vulnerable people into unsafe situations. Supporters say the policy brings order to chaotic immigration systems.
