Northeast Ohio is in for a frosty ride this week, with temperatures set to drop to dangerously low levels. The coldest days will be Monday and Tuesday, with wind chills plunging to -10 to -20 degrees. This means it's time to dig out those warm coats, hats, and gloves. The National Weather Service warns that northern Ohio, including areas like Cuyahoga, Medina, Portage, and Summit counties, will experience a prolonged cold snap. The wind chill is what makes it feel even colder than the actual temperature. For example, if it's 0°F and the wind is blowing at 15 mph, it feels like -19°F. In such conditions, exposed skin can freeze in just 30 minutes. To help residents stay warm, Akron is extending the hours of its warming centers. The Summit Lake Community Center will be open from 8 a. m. to 7 p. m. on Monday and Tuesday. Other community centers will be closed on Monday but will reopen on Tuesday with normal hours. The city will keep an eye on the temperatures and adjust the center hours as needed.
The Emergency Overnight Warming Center is also stepping up to provide food, shelter, and clothing to those in need. They are looking for volunteers and donations to keep their services running smoothly. If you're interested in helping out, you can find more information on their website. Staying safe in extreme cold means planning ahead. Check the forecast regularly and try to avoid being outside during the coldest parts of the day. Make sure your pets and livestock are safe and have access to unfrozen food and water. Keep your vehicle's gas tank at least half full in case you get stranded. Dressing appropriately is crucial. Layer up and protect your skin from the cold. The National Weather Service also recommends having a vehicle survival kit ready, just in case.
