China and Taiwan: A Clash of Words and Views
Beijing, ChinaSun Oct 26 2025
A top Chinese leader recently spoke about the idea of bringing Taiwan back under its control in a peaceful way. Wang Huning, a key figure in China's government, mentioned this during a special event in Beijing. He said China wants to share its growth with Taiwan but won't accept any moves towards Taiwanese independence. This event marked 80 years since Taiwan came under Chinese rule after World War II.
Taiwan's government, however, didn't take this news lightly. They said China's words were just the same old story and that China's real goal is to take over Taiwan. They also pointed out that the experience of Hong Kong shows that China's promise of "one country, two systems" is not what it seems. Taiwan's government believes that the people of Taiwan have no interest in being unified with China.
Instead of celebrating the event mentioned by China, Taiwan is focusing on a different historical moment. They are remembering the Battle of Guningtou, which happened in 1949. This was when communist forces tried but failed to take over Kinmen island. Taiwan's president even wrote about this on social media, saying Taiwan wants to be a trusted partner to its allies and protect the values of freedom and democracy.
The relationship between China and Taiwan has been tense this year. They have different views on the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. Taiwan was once a Japanese colony and was handed over to the Republic of China government in 1945. This government later moved to Taiwan after losing a civil war. Taiwan's government says only the people of Taiwan can decide their future.
