Hong Kong, ChinaSun Mar 29 2026
The top Chinese official in Hong Kong, Commissioner Cui Jianchun, sat down with U. S. Consul General Julie Eadeh on March 27 to voice strong disapproval of a U. S. public alert about Hong Kong’s new security measures. \n\nCui called the U. S. action a form of interference in China’s internal affairs and urged Washington to stop meddling in Hong Kong’s governance. \n\nEarlier this month, the Hong Kong government tightened its national security laws. The amendment now makes it a crime for people involved in security cases to refuse to reveal passwords or help decrypt electronic devices.
\n\nIn reaction, the U. S. Consulate General in Hong Kong issued a security alert on March 26, telling U. S. citizens to contact the consulate if they are detained under the new rules. \n\nThe U. S. Consulate did not reply to a request for comment outside business hours, leaving the full details of the diplomatic exchange unclear.
