China Steps Up Energy Push While Middle East Tensions Rise
Beijing, ChinaTue Apr 07 2026
China’s leader Xi Jinping wants the country to build a stronger energy system fast. The push comes as conflicts in the Middle East shake up global fuel supplies. China isn’t talking much about the war itself but wants to make sure its power stays steady no matter what happens abroad.
Xi didn’t mention the fighting directly, but experts say the timing matters. The U. S. and Iran have been close to a truce, yet oil routes like the Strait of Hormuz stay risky. China already stores lots of oil and mostly burns coal at home, so big price swings hurt less than most nations. Still, relying so much on coal keeps China the world’s top climate polluter, even while it adds more wind and solar.
Xi admits coal still runs the show for now. He calls it the “backbone” of power while pushing for cleaner, mixed sources. That mix includes pushing harder on hydropower and nuclear energy. Just last year, China started building the largest dam in the world on the Tibetan Plateau. Now a new solar plant is rising high in the mountains too.
Analysts wonder how far China can go. It leads the world in coal plants and carbon emissions, yet also leads in clean energy tech. The question is whether it can keep both sides working together without one always falling behind.
