Deep under the lush landscape of southern China, a massive underground lab called the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (Juno) is on a mission to unravel one of the universe's biggest mysteries. China has been investing heavily in science, and Juno is one of its most ambitious projects yet. This state-of-the-art facility will study tiny particles called neutrinos, which are everywhere but still not well understood.
Juno is a giant stainless steel and acrylic sphere, about 35 meters wide, built 700 meters underground to minimize radiation. No one has ever made a detector like this before. The project started in 2014 and will be finished next year, costing around 2. 2 billion yuan ($311 million).
Neutrinos are super-fast particles that come in three different masses, but scientists don't know which is heaviest or lightest. Juno will use data from two nearby nuclear power plants to solve this puzzle. If successful, it could help us understand more about our planet, the Sun, and even the history of the universe.
Even though similar experiments will happen in the US and Japan, Juno is leading the race. Around 750 scientists from 17 countries are involved, including some from the US. However, political tensions between the US and China are making it harder for some scientists to join.
One American scientist said that despite the challenges, working together shows that science can be apolitical.
