China's Massive Coast Guard Ship at Disputed Reef
Scarborough Shoal, ChinaTue Jan 07 2025
In a recent development, China has deployed one of the world's largest coast guard ships to Scarborough Shoal, a reef in the South China Sea that is claimed by both China and the Philippines. This massive vessel, nicknamed the "monster ship, " is over 12, 000 tons and 541 feet long. It's equipped with guns, making it a formidable presence in the disputed waters.
Scarborough Shoal, known as Huangyan Island in China and Bajo de Masinloc in the Philippines, is a crucial fishing ground. It lies within the Philippines' exclusive economic zone but has been controlled by China since 2012. Despite being more than 700 miles from China's nearest province, Hainan, China has been steadily increasing its control over the area.
China's coast guard fleet is the largest in the world, with over 150 vessels that are more than 1, 000 tons. The "monster ship" is one of the two largest, offering significant advantages in endurance, durability, seaworthiness, and speed compared to other nations' coast guard ships. This latest deployment follows a series of patrols and exercises by China's navy and air forces in the region.
Experts are closely watching this situation. While China asserts its maritime claims, the Philippines and other Southeast Asian nations feel victimized. The future of these disputed waters remains uncertain, especially with the possibility of increased U. S. naval activity in the area.
