China's Military Moves Near Taiwan: What's Behind It?

Taiwan Strait,Fri Dec 13 2024
Tensions are heating up around Taiwan. The island's Defense Ministry reported that China's navy and coast guard have been moving vessels in the Taiwan Strait and the Western Pacific. This comes after Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te visited Hawaii and Guam, which didn't sit well with Beijing. China sees Taiwan as part of its territory, even though Taiwan has never been under its control. China's military drills are a way to show displeasure with Taiwan's actions and the US's support. Taiwan, however, is staying alert and ready to protect itself. The latest moves by China seem different from previous drills, focusing more on the strategic islands nearby. Even the airspace has been restricted in certain zones. China's Foreign Ministry defended its actions, saying it's protecting its sovereignty. Meanwhile, Lai urged countries to stand against authoritarianism during his trip.
