China's Monster Magnet: A 42. 02 Tesla Marvel

A magnetic field so strong, it puts Earth's to shame by over 800, 000 times! In China, scientists just pulled off this incredible feat. At the Steady High Magnetic Field Facility (SHMFF) in Hefei, they created a resistive magnet that hit a whopping 42. 02 tesla. Compare that to Earth's cozy 50 microtesla field! This record-breaking magnet was unveiled on September 22, pipping the previous champion – a Florida magnet from 2017. Why the fascination with super-strong magnets? Well, they open doors to weird and wonderful new physics realms. Stronger magnets can help scientists uncover new states of matter. They also boost the sensitivity of scientific instruments, making faint phenomena easier to spot.The SHMFF's new magnet is up for grabs for international researchers to test on advanced materials like superconductors. But, they're still useful as they can maintain high magnetic fields for longer than superconducting magnets. In 2022, China even showed off a hybrid resistive/superconducting magnet that reached 45. 22 tesla. Meanwhile, the US National Lab's mini prototype hit 45. 5 tesla briefly in 2019. But making these low-power systems reliable, affordable, and cool remains tricky. So, resistive magnets are still in high demand.
