China has strongly reacted to the US considering restrictions on commercial Chinese drones. On Thursday, the US Commerce Department hinted at new rules to tackle national security risks posed by foreign drones, particularly those from China and Russia. This move could lead to bans or regulations on Chinese drones, which are quite popular globally. China's foreign ministry spokesperson, Mao Ning, criticized the US on Friday. She accused the US of expanding the concept of national security and disrupting normal trade activities. Ning also warned that this could affect global production and supply chains, saying China will protect its rights.
The US is concerned that Chinese drone technology might allow remote access and control, posing significant risks. In October 2022, DJI, the world's largest drone manufacturer, sued the US Department of Defense over being labeled a "Chinese Military Company. " DJI denies being owned or controlled by the military, claiming it's a private entity. The company has faced US scrutiny, including allegations of being involved in surveilling ethnic minorities in China. Recently, the US also moved to ban vehicles with Chinese and Russian technology, citing similar security concerns. The US Commerce Department is collecting public feedback until March 4. The final decision will be left to the incoming administration of President-elect Donald Trump.
