China’s Take on the US Election: Hope vs. Reality

Hong Kong, ChinaSun Nov 03 2024
China is closely watching the US election, but many people there don’t expect much change in the tense relationship between the two countries. Whether it’s Trump or Harris who wins, it seems like US policy toward China will stay the same. The past four years have seen both tariffs and talk of better ties, but the overall feeling is that America wants to slow down China’s growth. Meanwhile, China has its own problems, like a sluggish economy and a pandemic that won’t go away. China’s state media has been focusing on the chaos in the US, showing cartoons of the Statue of Liberty getting crushed by a dragon labeled “political violence. ” They’re trying to make their political system look better by comparing it to the US. But some people in China are also looking at the US election and thinking about how different it is from their own system. Neither Trump nor Harris is very popular in China. Some people laugh at Harris’ laugh, while others think Trump helped China by making the US look bad. But overall, people aren’t very excited about this election. They think that no matter who wins, the relationship between the US and China won’t get better. China’s leaders probably agree. They think that whoever wins, the US will keep putting pressure on China. Trump might cause more problems, but Harris might not make things much better. So, China is getting ready for more of the same.
