In recent weeks, shoppers in the UK have noticed a new sight: Cadbury chocolate bars wrapped in clear plastic shields. Major supermarkets such as Sainsbury's, Tesco and the Co‑op are adopting these anti‑theft measures after a surge in chocolate pilfering. Police and retailers claim that the sugary treats are no longer just casual shop‑lifters’ targets; organised theft rings now trade them alongside alcohol, meat and coffee.
The Heart of England Co‑operative suffered losses close to $340, 000 last year alone. One offender can swipe thousands of pounds’ worth of chocolate in a single week, the co‑op warned. To curb theft, some stores now stock shelves only half full, move chocolate away from eye‑level spots and install AI‑linked CCTV. Some even display pictures of known shoplifters at cash registers to deter repeat crimes.
The British Retail Consortium reported 5. 5 million shop‑theft incidents last year, plus over 1, 600 violent episodes against staff. Retail groups are demanding stronger police support, harsher sentences for repeat offenders and a crackdown on the resale networks that profit from stolen sweets. In September, Britain’s most prolific chocolate thief was caught and sentenced to 20 months in prison.
