Chocolate Theft Sends KitKat Shortage Looming
Central Italy to Poland,Sat Mar 28 2026
A hefty 12‑ton load of Nestlé’s KitKat bars vanished during a European delivery, sparking fears of empty shelves just before Easter.
The stolen shipment contained 413, 793 units of the brand’s newest chocolate line. It was en route from a factory in central Italy to a distribution hub in Poland when it disappeared.
Nestlé’s spokesperson joked that the thieves had taken the company’s “break” slogan quite literally, turning a simple snack into a bold heist.
The company is working closely with local police and its logistics partners to track the missing truck, which has yet to be recovered.
If the bars do not turn up, retailers could face a shortage, and consumers might find it harder to buy their favorite chocolate treats before the holiday.
There is a risk that the missing products could surface in underground markets across Europe, further complicating recovery efforts.
Each KitKat bar carries a unique batch code that could help identify the stolen goods. Nestlé says that if a scanner matches a bar, it will prompt an alert to KitKat’s tracking system, allowing the company to share evidence with authorities.
The incident highlights vulnerabilities in supply chains and raises questions about how food companies safeguard high‑value goods during transit.
