Choosing the Best Captain: A Fresh Look at IPL Leadership

IndiaTue Jun 02 2026
Sanjay Manjrekar, a former player turned commentator, recently voiced his thoughts on who should lead IPL teams. He argued that the role of captain should not be tied to a player’s nationality but to their skill and experience. In his view, several Indian leaders such as Axar Patel, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Hardik Pandya and Rishabh Pant have not delivered the expected results in the league. Manjrekar highlighted that overseas captains like David Warner and Pat Cummins have proven themselves capable of guiding teams to victory. He also pointed out that franchises often choose Indian captains because they help strengthen the team’s brand. An Indian captain can become a recognizable face and attract fans, which is valuable for marketing purposes.
However, he believes that teams should balance brand appeal with winning potential. The ideal captain must be a strong leader, whether they are Indian or foreign. Manjrekar noted that star players such as Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni and Rishabh Pant bring a lot of attention to their teams. Their presence can boost the franchise’s identity and create excitement among supporters. He cautioned that while brand value is important, the primary goal of any team should be to win titles. Therefore, leadership choices should focus on competence rather than just commercial appeal.
