Chris Kirk Fires 63 to Lead Cabo Golf Opener
A big money golf tournament kicked off Thursday in Cabo San Lucas. The World Wide Technology Championship offers a six million dollar purse. Players tee it up at El Cardonal Golf Course. The track stretches 7,452 yards and plays to a par of 72. Conditions looked good for scoring early on.
Chris Kirk grabbed the early lead with a blistering 63. He carded 32 on the front nine and 31 coming home. That nine under par start puts him one shot clear. Zac Blair and Nick Dunlap sit tied for second at 64. A pack of five players follows at 65 including Harry Hall and Taylor Montgomery. The leaderboard is crowded at the top.
Dozens of pros posted scores in the mid 60s. Patton Kizzire and Beau Hossler are among those at 66. Another large group sits at 67 and 68. The cut line will likely fall around even par. Many big names like Tony Finau and Billy Horschel opened with 70. They have work to do on Friday to stick around.
The bottom of the leaderboard tells a different story. Several players struggled to break 80. Jorge Villar posted an 87 with a 46 on the front side. Harry Higgs shot 80. Nicholas Lindheim carded a 79. Those guys need a miracle round just to make the weekend. The course can bite back if you miss fairways.
Second round action starts Friday morning. Kirk will try to hold his lead. The chasing pack wants to pounce. Wind could pick up and change everything. This tournament is just getting started.
