Cities and Nature: How Green Solutions Can Make Urban Life Better

Tue Jul 15 2025

Nature-based solutions (NbS) are gaining traction as a means to address urban issues. By leveraging natural processes, these solutions aim to enhance urban living conditions. However, the abundance of information on NbS makes it challenging to determine the most effective approaches for different locations.

Key Findings from Recent Study

A comprehensive study reviewed 61 articles on NbS and gathered input from experts across seven global regions. The research identified eight main challenges associated with NbS, including:

  • Definition and Focus: Issues with how NbS are defined and the aspects they emphasize.
  • Study Locations: Where NbS are studied and their applicability in different contexts.
  • Community Involvement: How effectively communities are engaged in the NbS process.

Effectiveness of NbS

The study revealed that NbS are most effective when they are tailored to the local environment. This involves:

  • Local Ecological Knowledge: Using local ecological insights to design and implement NbS.
  • Inclusive Planning: Ensuring NbS are integrated into all levels of planning and governance to promote fairness and inclusivity.

Recommendations for Improvement

To enhance the effectiveness of NbS, the study suggests four key actions:

  1. Research and Innovation: Investing in more research and innovation in NbS.
  2. Global Alliance: Establishing a global alliance to share knowledge and best practices.
  3. Systems Approach: Adopting a systems approach to planning and implementing NbS.
  4. Financing and Support: Securing more financing and political support for NbS initiatives.

Addressing Global Disparities

The study also emphasizes the need for more research in the Global South, as NbS may have different outcomes in various parts of the world. By addressing these challenges, NbS can become more effective in improving urban life.
