Citizens and Council Members Discuss Crime and Police Support in Gary
Gary, USAFri Jan 10 2025
Two Gary residents, Ivan Ursey and Christy Sass, recently shared their concerns about crime in the city during a Common Council meeting. Ursey, who also chairs the Gary Republican Party, talked about a relative being held at gunpoint and having their wallet stolen. He feels that the city needs more police officers to handle the rising crime rates and that officers should be paid more to attract and retain talent. The average annual salary for Gary police officers is around $62, 000.
Sass, on the other hand, described hearing gunshots near her home and learning about a double homicide the next morning. She emphasized how frightening it is to live in a place where gunshots are common and the police response seems slow. Both residents believe that the city’s police force is doing its best but is understaffed and lacks resources.
Council President Tai Adkins suggested that residents direct their concerns to the Gary Police Department. Councilman Darren Washington, whose brother was killed in a shooting, argued that the police are doing their best with the resources they have. He encouraged community members to support the police and understand that they react to crime rather than prevent it.
At a recent Board of Public Works meeting, nine new police officers and three new firefighters were sworn in. Councilwoman Marian Ivey shared her experience with a family member’s murder, highlighting the diligent work of the police department. Councilman Kenneth Whisenton called for community support and collaboration to tackle gun violence effectively.
