Ohio's Little Miami Local Schools is stirring up a debate. On Thursday night, the school board will talk about a policy that might make teachers take down most posters, flags, and displays in classrooms. The district wants to focus classrooms on the curriculum, not social or political issues. Little Miami serves over 5, 000 students in Warren County. A board member, David Wallace, backs the policy. He thinks teachers can still keep family photos and motivational posters. But, he believes classroom materials should stick to the subjects being taught.
About 800 people have signed a petition against this policy. Some teachers and parents worry that this will make classrooms feel cold and institutional. This could affect how students feel and learn. The policy allows only certain flags, classroom curriculum displays, and achievement signs. The board won’t vote on Thursday. They'll decide if the policy should be voted on in January. The meeting is at the district's office in Maineville at 6 PM.
