Clean Slate: A Modern Take On Family

Fri Feb 07 2025
Coming home after 23 years and your family doesn't even know your current name. That's the situation Desiree finds herself in on Clean Slate, a new TV series now available on Amazon Prime Video. This show is based on a "Sanford & Son" reboot which has been greatly revised. It was executive produced by Norman Lear before his death. The story rotates around Desiree (played by Laverne Cox) who has returned to her hometown. Desiree is a trans woman and her father is a car-wash owner. He only knew Desiree as a son. Her father, Harry, is played by George Wallace. Harry is a fumbling and uninformed father who is initially surprised by his daughter's return. The show plays with the idea of being caught off guard by the changes in people. The cast is filled with well-known actors and comedians. Sandwiched between his anger and confusion, Harry finds out that Desiree isn't just trans, she's also a vegetarian. In the show there is a mix of old and new. For Harry, there's a whole new world to adapt to. This family drama is not just about a trans woman, but also about the role of a church in the community. "Clean Slate" was filmed in Savannah, Georgia, between March and June 2023. It is a remake of "Sanford & Son, " which was first aired in 1972 and was originally set in the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles. The show doesn't just focus on the father-daughter drama, it also has a diverse cast of characters. This includes a gay childhood friend, a mom, a nemesis neighbor, and a potential love interest for Desiree. The show introduces Desiree's gay but-closeted childhood friend-turned-church director, D. K. Uzoukwu, Desiree’s mother Telma Hopkins, Harry’s nemesis neighbor Miguel, and Harry’s car-wash employee, Mac (Jay Wilkison, “Younger”). The series has a "Schitt's Creek" vibe with some dead-pan humor and a touch of the absurd. There are many other new shows. A new reboot of "Little House on the Prairie" is coming to Netflix. The Sandman is another series with a reboot for season two coming out on Netflix in 2024. There are also a bunch of other shows coming back, like "Last Week Tonight" with John Oliver and "America's Got Talent". There is even a new show on Fox Corp. called "WWE Evolve". But that's not all. "WWE LFG", "WWE Rivals", and "WWE's Greatest Moments" are all coming to WWE. "America's Got Talent" will have a new judge back, Mel B. The "Dish Nation" show will not be returning for the 2025-26 season. As well as "Person, Place or Thing" and "Pictionary" shows. "The Cube" and its "Wipeout" reboot are cancelled as well as "Hysteria". There are several different shows getting cancelled and new ones coming out. There will be a deal for a pilot order of a potential "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" sequel. Netflix is going to have a new streaming bundle, including Starz and BET+ for $16 per month.
