A world where cooking doesn't harm the health of older women. That's the idea behind a recent trial in several countries. Researchers wanted to see if switching from wood or charcoal to a cleaner fuel like liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) could make a difference. They studied women aged 40 to 79, measuring tiny particles (PM2. 5), black carbon (BC), and carbon monoxide (CO) in their air. Two hundred and nine women got LPG stoves and fuel, while another 209 kept using biomass.
The results? After 18 months, LPG users had much lower exposure to these pollutants. Think 62% less PM2. 5, 73% less BC, and 57% less CO. It's like going from a smoky kitchen to a clean one. Plus, most of the LPG users had exposures below the World Health Organization's annual target. So, what does this tell us? Cleaner cooking can be a game-changer for women's health. Let's think about that the next time we light a stove.
