Scientists recently explored a clever way to remove nickel ions from wastewater using powdered clam shells. They filled a glass column with the shells and tested how well the setup worked by changing the flow rate. The best results showed that 87. 68% of nickel ions were removed when the flow rate was set to 8 milliliters per minute, with the shells packed to a height of 25 centimeters. This system also helped understand the movement of nickel ions through the column, revealing some unexpected behaviors. The researchers used a mathematical model called the Thomas model to predict how the column would behave. They also looked at another model, called the BDST model, to figure out how deep the column should be for larger-scale use. By understanding these models, they found that using powdered clam shells in a packed bed column could be a great way to clean up metal waste from industrial wastewater.
