Climate Change: New York's Bill & Why Big Oil Should Pay
New York City, Manhattan, USAThu Dec 19 2024
New York City's 500 miles of coastline are at risk from rising sea levels and increased storm surges. Future heat waves will only get worse. By 2050, the city could see temperatures rise by up to 5. 5 degrees Fahrenheit. This means more property damage, health issues, and lives lost. But who pays? Taxpayers are footing the bill for the pollution caused by Big Oil. Between 2021 and 2023, these companies made $750 billion in profits. Shouldn't they share the cost? Governor Hochul could sign the Climate Change Superfund Act, making these companies pay $3 billion annually. This money could save lives by protecting communities from flooding and extreme heat. It's time to make the polluters pay, not just the people.
New Yorkers are worried about gun violence too. Families in Madison, Wisconsin, are hurting after a school shooting. This isn't the first time. From Newtown to Uvalde, shootings have become a scary part of life. Kids should feel safe in classrooms, not practice hiding. Some think armed officers in schools could help. But others wonder, are drones really our biggest problem? After all, people are driving recklessly and texting. And let's not forget about the loss of freedom and democracy.
Police use of force is also a hot topic. A man was killed on the subway by a former Marine. Some call him a hero, but others say he went too far. Should he have used lethal force? It's a tough question.
Politics can be confusing. A former president promised to lower grocery prices but hasn't yet. People are still worried about the war in Ukraine. And what about the man who killed someone on the subway? Some see him as a hero, others as someone who went too far. It's hard to know who to believe.
