CNN’s Digital Shift: A New Era Begins
ATLANTA, USAFri Jan 24 2025
In a striking move, CNN recently revealed plans to lay off around 200 employees, largely from their TV division. This shift is part of a broader strategy to transition more heavily into digital operations. CEO Mark Thompson, formerly at The New York Times and BBC, is behind this change. He's been tasked by Warner Bros. Discovery to revive CNN's popularity, which has been declining as viewers ditch cable. The network expects to add new jobs in the digital sector, backed by a hefty $70 million investment.
Thompson assured that this isn't just about saving costs, but rather, investing more. The news industry is seeing widespread layoffs, and CNN's ratings have been hit following President Donald Trump’s election, a longtime critic of the network. Even a legal setback, where CNN was found liable for defamation, hasn't deterred their plans.
CNN is developing a new streaming service, although details are still vague. Under Thompson, CNN has been quietly updating its website with new features. They even introduced a subscription model last year, charging for heavier usage. The goal is to shift CNN’s audience towards more modern platforms.
Schedule changes are also in the works. Veteran anchor Wolf Blitzer’s show is moving from evening to morning. Jake Tapper’s show starts earlier, and Audie Cornish will host a morning show. Other anchors like Kasie Hunt and Rahel Solomon will also get new slots.
While many challenges remain, including reaching Trump supporters, CNN aims to stand out with solid journalism and unbiased reporting. Thompson wants CNN to be a place where viewers can form their own opinions based on facts. He insists the network will stay focused on its core mission, despite the shake-up.
