Coachella 2025: The Good, the Bad, and the Bizarre
Coachella Valley, Indio, USAMon Apr 14 2025
Coachella 2025 was a rollercoaster of events. The festival kicked off with a massive traffic jam, leaving many attendees stranded for hours. Imagine the frustration of finally reaching the venue, only to find that the wristband scanners were malfunctioning. To make matters worse, temperatures soared above 100 degrees, adding to the discomfort. Despite these challenges, once inside, festival-goers were treated to an array of performances from top artists.
The festival featured headliners like Lady Gaga, Travis Scott, and Post Malone. Lady Gaga’s set was particularly memorable, transforming the stage into an opera house and delivering a powerful mix of theatrics and vocals. However, her set was notably missing the iconic "Just Dance, " a song that has been a staple in her performances for years. Travis Scott’s Cactus Jack pop-up was a unique experience, blending elements of a soccer arena, a tattoo parlor, and a State Farm booth. It was an odd mix, but it offered something different for attendees.
One of the standout performances was from Seun Kuti and his band, Egypt 80. Their Afrobeat set was a breath of fresh air, bringing the sounds and politics of Fela Kuti to a younger audience. The set was flanked by visuals of Malcolm X, Nelson Mandela, and Marcus Garvey, adding a layer of depth to the performance. Another highlight was Missy Elliott’s futuristic set, which began with an alien spaceship beaming down a sleek silver car onto the stage. Elliott, dressed in a Transformer costume, delivered a hit-filled performance that kept the crowd engaged.
The festival also saw its share of lows. Three 6 Mafia’s set ended with a painfully silent audience, despite their iconic songs. The energy at the festival was generally low, with many attendees too preoccupied with recording performances to fully enjoy the music. The Los Angeles Philharmonic’s performance was another low point, as their classical music clashed with the pop and hip-hop acts. The set felt scattered and anti-climactic, failing to blend well with the other performances.
Some performances were downright bizarre. Weezer’s set was a weird week, as they were added to the lineup just days before the festival. Bassist Scott Shriner’s wife was involved in a shooting incident, but this did not stop him from performing. Benson Boone’s set was another oddity, as he covered Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” with guitarist Brian May. The performance was impressive, but it was also criticized for making May stick around to perform additional songs.
The festival also saw some unexpected collaborations. Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day showed up a day before his band’s performance to sing with the Go-Go’s. He later invited fans to join him on stage during Green Day’s set, adding a touch of spontaneity to the performance. The cast of Yo Gabba Gabba! also made an appearance, delivering a high-energy set that included songs about bugs, broccoli, and not biting friends. The set ended with a performance of “Rainbow Connection, ” featuring “Weird Al” Yankovic, Paul Williams, and Portugal. The Man.
The festival also saw some technical difficulties. Rema’s debut performance was marred by a 30-minute delay and mostly lip-syncing. The Misfits’ set was another disappointment, as they started late and had technical issues. Frontman Glenn Danzig complained about the dry conditions, adding to the frustration of the audience. Despite these challenges, Coachella 2025 offered a mix of highs and lows, making it a memorable experience for attendees.
