Coinbase Cuts Staff, Trims for an AI‑Focused Future

San Francisco, California, USA,Wed May 06 2026
Coinbase has decided to reduce its workforce by about 14 percent, roughly 700 employees. The move follows a shift toward artificial intelligence to speed up product delivery and cut costs. The company’s leader explained that engineers can now finish tasks in days that once took weeks. Non‑technical staff are also involved, but many routine jobs will be automated. This change aims to make Coinbase leaner and quicker, similar to its early startup days. Other tech giants have taken similar steps. Meta announced 8, 000 cuts last month, and Amazon let go of 14, 000 people in October. These layoffs are often linked to AI efficiencies that promise higher productivity.
Coinbase’s strategy also includes flattening management and creating small, flexible teams—sometimes just one person handling engineering, design, and product roles. The goal is to increase each employee’s impact. Those laid off will receive a severance package that includes 16 weeks of base pay, extra payment for each year worked, continued equity vesting, and six months of health coverage. Similar terms will apply to employees outside the United States.
